Giant ghost 'hand' extends into space in new X-ray view

A gigantic ghost hand stretched through the depths of space, its tiny fingers pressed against the glowing clouds. SLOTXO

looks like science fiction but quite true Because of the images collected by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

The "hand" was formed by the death of a massive star in a supernova explosion. This leaves the remains of a fast-rotating, dense star known as a pulsar, team member Chandra said in a stunning caption.

The pulsar blows air bubbles of energetic particles around itself, which, together with the debris blown off by a supernova explosion. This creates a hand-like structure that is 150 light-years long. Its out-of-the-box glowing feature is the gigantic gas cloud known as RCW 89.

The central remnant of the supernova, known as MSH 15-52, is approximately 17,000 light-years from Earth. The youngest known supernova remnant in our Milky Way galaxy, said Chandra team member.
